Normals Need Not Apply
“Only a tiny percentage of those who apply to be a Navy SEAL ever make it through the rigorous training program. Most participants drop out before the end of Hell Week, a five-day period in which they sleep for a total of four hours. Here, successful Hell Week graduates practice what are known as ‘Over the Beach evolutions’ in May 2004.” Photo by Eric S. Logsdon / U.S. Navy via Getty Images. From Slate.

Celebrating a Death: Ugly, Maybe, but Only Human
Benedict Carey, The New York Times, May 5, 2011

Yes, “celebrating” bin Laden’s death was very natural, but it was not a matter of “revenge”. It was a sense of increased safety, relief, a reduction in fear, and deterrence to others. The people who thought the “celebration” was unseemly were expressing emotional weakness and a fear of retaliation, not moral sense, kindness toward their fellow human beings, or righteousness.
